
I have been trying to photograph this shy squirrel for ages. It is hard to see in the open areas and if it makes its way to the ground under the bird feeders it runs off at the sound of a human footstep or the click of a door latch. Finally one day I found it hiding in a tree and managed to get a shot at it.
What makes this squirrel different from our usual ones is that it is about twice the size of the slim manic red squirrel that was featured last week and is our usual variety. It has much more of the agouti coat, with only a hint of red, and it features a huge, bushy, silky, silver tail, which is the first feature you notice about it. He's heavy and clumsy and tumbles off branches and out of the tree at times. Not at all sure footed like the red clown nearby.
